Red Flare

      GREATER LONDON SOUTH WEST COUNTY SCOUT COUNCIL

                  OPERATION RED FLARE 2022 – 40th Year

 

Operation Red Flare takes place on 26-27 November 2022, and is open to teams of Explorer Scouts and Ranger Guides in GLSW and Explorers from neighbouring Counties

 

Details are as follows:-

  • Location is the Surrey Hills
  • Start: 1st Horsley Scout Group Headquarters (TQ 088548)
  • Finish: To be disclosed in due course
  • Route: 20-25 km long with activities at checkpoints and camping overnight at the finish.
  • Teams will comprise 4,5,6,or 7 Explorer Scouts or Ranger Guides
  • The permitted age range is between 14th and 18th birthday at the date of the event.
  • The cost per team is £44.25 payable with entry on Trybooking.
  • Entries: Recognised Units, including Young Leader Units, may enter 1 team initially by a deadline of 15 October up to a maximum total of 25 teams. (This is to encourage as many Units as possible to enter a team). After that team entries will be accepted on a first come first served basis up to an overall maximum of 35 teams by the final deadline of 5 November. No Unit may enter more than two teams.
  • A kit list and joining instructions, including check-in and start times, will be sent to all teams soon after 5 November.
  • Refreshments: There will be refreshments at the finish and a simple breakfast meal before results are declared on the Sunday morning at 0900 hours.
  • Scoring: Points will be awarded for accuracy in navigation, activities at checkpoints, and time taken to complete the journey.
  • Trophies and certificates: There will be trophies for the winners and other categories, including novices and visitors (kindly donated), plus the much sought after ‘wooden spoon’. Certificates will be presented to all teams which take part.
  • NAN Forms will need to be completed by each Unit taking part. A health form for each participant completed by the parent/carer will need to be handed to the organisers at the beginning of the event. This is compulsory: no health form, the participant won’t be able to take part. An overall event risk assessment will be written by the event organisers and shared with everyone involved in the event.
  • Checkpoint Marshalls: Please contact Chris Dean if you are willing to run a checkpoint. All adults acting as judges etc must be DBS checked.
  • Unit Leaders’ Meeting: This will be by Zoom on Wednesday 9 November at 8.00 pm. It is essential that each Unit is represented.
