Growing Roots
This is where we all start. To complete the Growing Roots E-learning you will need to log in to the membership system and navigate to the My Learning pages. Instructions on how to do this are here My learning | Scouts. Do make sure that your growing roots training is kept up to date. My learning will show you when you need to renew your training. You and your default team leader will also get an email as your expiry approaches.
What modules and when do I need to do them?
Within 30 days of your role starting

- Safety
Within 6 months of your role starting but ideally as soon as possible
- Who we are and what we do
- Creating inclusion
- Data protection in Scouts
Needed for some volunteers within 6 months of your role starting but ideally as soon as possible
- Being a trustee in Scouts – For all Trustees in Scouts
- Leading Scout Volunteers – For all Lead Volunteers in Scouts
- Delivering a great programme – For all volunteers in a section
First Response
All volunteers who interact with young people and Group Lead Volunteers need to have a First Response qualification which is approved by Scouts.
Not all districts in the County work the same way in how these courses are delivered. If you have any questions about how the courses are delivered, get in touch with the learning contact for your District. You can find their details below.
Wood badge
If you want to consolidate and have your training recognised the Wood Badge is an international award that demonstrates commitment to learning and development with Scouts.
Completing the award is optional and you can choose to work towards it as part of any ongoing development.
If you are interested in completing your wood badge, get in touch with the relevant Learning Team Leader in your district.
